Karoo Kwezi

COMPANY PROFILE

We save plastic bottles from the landfill, and turn them into lampshades, gifts and decorations. We draw inspiration from our beautiful proteas, pincushions and daisies indigenous to the Karoo.

Karoo Kwezi was started by Irma Weyers in 2011 as a project to utilise waste items for the creation of new products. This project has created various work opportunities for the local communities, whilst keeping our town clean and educating the little ones about recycling. Karoo Kwezi started in Somerset East in the Karoo, where we trained eight ladies from the rural community. Pasella from SABC 2 came to visit us at our workshop and did a wonderful story about us. Our second workshop was opened in Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth where we trained ten woman.Karoo Kwezi attended the Women and the Environment Dialogue 2015 hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs in Pretoria. In 2016 we were accepted at Full-Incubation level with Propella, where they assisted us in refining our business idea with the help of a Business Mentor. IWMSA Eastern Cape held a regional waste conference at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and we were asked to decorate the event.
